Cookie Policy

What NearbyRents stores in your browser, why, and how to get rid of it. This page lists every item by name.

The short version

We use a small number of cookies and browser storage keys to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences. We do not use any of them to track you across other websites. Google, our advertising partner, does set its own cookies — you can tell us not to personalise ads using the cookie notice, and you can clear everything at any time from your browser settings.

1. Strictly necessary

Without these the site cannot keep you signed in. They are set only once you sign in, and there is no way to refuse them and still have an account session — so the cookie notice does not offer one.

NameKindWhat it is forHow long
refreshTokenCookie (httpOnly)Renews your session so you are not signed out every few minutes. httpOnly means no script — ours or anyone else’s — can read it.Until it expires or you sign out
accessTokenCookieIdentifies you on each request to our API.Short-lived; refreshed automatically
auth-stateLocal storageYour access token and basic profile, so a reload does not sign you out.Until you sign out

Signing out clears all three. You can also clear them yourself: they are removed when you clear site data for nearbyrents.com in your browser.

2. Preferences

Small values that remember how you like the site set up. None of these ever leaves your browser — we do not send them anywhere and we cannot read them from our side.

What it remembersKindHow long
The city or state you are browsing inLocal storageUntil you change it or clear site data
Whether you are viewing daily or monthly pricesLocal storageUntil you change it
Whether you unmuted a video advert in a particular slotLocal storageUntil you change it
Your answer to the cookie noticeLocal storageUntil you clear site data

3. Advertising

We show adverts through Google AdSense, and we sell some placements directly to local businesses. The directly-sold ones are served by us and set nothing in your browser. Google’s are different:

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and/or other sites on the Internet.

Turning personalisation off

Turning personalisation off does not remove adverts — it means the ones you see are chosen from the page you are on rather than from anything about you. For more on how Google uses data from sites that use its services, see Google’s partner-sites policy.

4. Measuring how the site is used

We count page views and visits ourselves, on our own servers — there is no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel and no third-party analytics script on this site. To do that we keep two identifiers in your browser.

NameKindWhat it is forHow long
nbr.sessionIdSession storageGroups the pages of a single visit together, so we can tell one visit from ten.Until you close the tab
nbr.visitorIdLocal storageA random string — not your name, email or anything we could look you up by. It lets us tell a returning visitor from a new one, and see which shared link brought someone to the site. Only set if you chose “Accept all”.Until you clear site data or change your answer
nbr.visitorId.sSession storageUsed instead of the above when you chose “Only what’s needed”, or have not answered yet. It cannot connect one visit to the next.Until you close the tab
nbr.attrSession storageRemembers which link or post you arrived from, so we know which of our own posts are worth making.Until you close the tab

If you choose “Only what’s needed”, we delete nbr.visitorId if it is already there, and stop setting it. Visits are still counted, but each one stands alone and cannot be linked to any other.

If you later sign up, the browsing you did beforehand is attached to your account — that is how we can tell which shared link led to a sign-up. You can ask us to delete all of it; see the Privacy Policy.

5. What we do not do

Changing your mind

Every browser can clear cookies and site data, and most can block them per site — look for “Privacy”, “Site settings” or “Cookies and site data” in your settings. Blocking the strictly necessary ones will sign you out and keep you signed out.

To change the answer you gave our cookie notice, clear site data for nearbyrents.com; the notice will appear again on your next visit.
